Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Haque Chowdhury was born in Beanibazar, Sylhet. He passed SSC examination from Zakiganj Government High School with brilliant result in 1972 and passed HSC examination from Sylhet MC College in 1974.
He was then admitted to the Department of Mathematics, Chittagong University and passed B. Sc Hons in 1977 and stood First Class First. He passed M. Sc in Mathematics along with the successful completion of thesis from the same University in 1978 and also stood First Class First. He obtained highest marks in both B. Sc Hons and M. Sc not only in the Department of Mathematics but also in the whole University.
For these meritorious results, he achieved Honorable President’s Reception at Bangabhaban and was also selected for the Honorable President’s Sea-cruise for four days in 1981 in which he participated.
He started his professional career as a Lecturer in Mathematics in Bajitpur Degree College, Kishorganj. Thereafter, he also served at Adamjee Cantonment College, Dhaka Cantonment (Non-government College). He competed for BCS-1985 and qualified. Then he joined the Government service as BCS (Education) Cadre. He taught Mathematics in various Graduate and Post-graduate level Colleges for 34 years including 9 years 4 months in Educational Administration.
During Government service, he acquired M Phil degree in 1997 and PhD degree in January-2004 from Jamal Nazrul Islam Research Centre for Mathematical & Physical Sciences (RCMPS), Chittagong University, attaining scholarship from International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy. He feels proud of being the student of one of the renowned scientists in the world, Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam (D. Sc) and also UGC Professor, Dr. Abul Mansur Chowdhury.
He was selected directly to the post of Professor of Mathematics from the post of Assistant Professor by Public Service Commission (PSC) in 10% quota (he is the only person of Mathematics in Bangladesh) and was appointed to this post. He got Selection Grade Professor Post (getting seniority from 2006) in 2013 on the recommendation of Superior Selection Board (SSB) and by the approval of the Honorable Prime Minister.
For last 9 years 4 months of his government service, he was the Principal of Sylhet Government Women’s College (Post graduate level) and retired in February 2015. He joined as the Professor and Dean of the School of Science and Technology of Metropolitan University in April 2015.
During Liberation War in 1971, he was a student of class X. He helped the freedom fighters in many aspects. While he was a University student, he won First Prizes in literary competitions (viz occasional essay competition, set speech, extempore speech etc) and participated in National TV Debate Competition and achieved the recognition of the best speaker.
He is a man of study and research. His field of research is “Chaos in Dissipative Dynamical Systems”. His research papers were published in different journals and many of his mathematical, ethical and contemporary relevant articles were published in daily national newspapers and in different scientific and institutional magazines. He presented eight research papers in different International Mathematical Conferences and Bangladesh Mathematical Society Conferences.
He visited the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, India and Qatar. In these countries, he visited Cambridge University, Oxford University, Calcutta University, Presidency University, Madinah Islamic University and Qatar University.
