The 17th?Death Anniversary of Professor M. Habibur Rahman, former Vice Chancellor of Metropolitan University, Sylhet was observed on Thursday, 27th July 2023 in Professor M. Habibur Rahman Hall. A Memorial discussion on the life of Prof. M. Habibur Rahman was held, presided over by Professor Dr. Suresh Ranjan Basak, Treasurer and Dean of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences.?Honourable Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Dr. Mohammad Jahirul Hoque attended the programme as the Chief Guest. On this occasion, scholarship was awarded to 10 meritorious students of Metropolitan University by Professor M. Habibur Rahman Education Trust. Mr. Enamul Habib, the eldest son of Professor M. Habibur Rahman and Director General (Additional Secretary) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was present as a Special Guest.
Dr. Rama Islam, Head of the Department of English and Convener of Professor M. Habibur Rahman's Death Anniversary Observance Committee 2023 delivered the welcome speech. Deputy Registrar Mr. Mihir Kanti Choudhury presented the keynote paper. Besides, Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Haque Chowdhury Dean, School of Science & Technology; Professor Choudhury M. Mukammel Wahid, Advisor (Student Welfare); Professor Dr. Mohammad Jamal Uddin, Head of the Department of Economics also spoke on that occasion. Deans of Schools, Heads of Departments, Director (Finance), Deputy Controller of Examinations, Librarian, students, teachers, officers and employees were present on the occasion.
At the beginning of the programme, a minute?s silence was observed in honour of Professor M. Habibur Rahman?s memory.
During the speech, Honourable Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Dr. Mohammad Jahirul Hoque said, ?Professor M. Habibur Rahman was not just an academic; He was a pioneer whose contributions continue to inspire generations. His dedication to the betterment of society will be a beacon of light for our institution and future generations.?His extraordinary journey as a talented student, proficient professor, visionary vice chancellor, reformer, author and researcher has earned him unwavering respect and admiration from people around the world.?
Additional Secretary Mr. Enamul Habib said, ?My father's passion for education and uncompromising commitment to Bangladesh's liberation war inspired our family as well as society.?I would like to express my gratitude to all concerned for the recognition of my father?s contribution, especially Honorable Chairman, Board of Trustees Dr. Toufique Rahman Chowdhury and the Vice Chancellor of the University?Professor Dr. Mohammad Jahirul Hoque.?
In his speech, Professor Dr. Suresh Ranjan Basak, Treasurer of Metropolitan University and Chair of the discussion meeting said, ?Professor M. Habibur Rahman was an honest, brave and scholarly person. I find it appropriate to mention his honesty and courage in one of my books while dedicating it to him.?His selfless contribution for the betterment of society, country and humanity at large has left an indelible mark in the history of academia and social welfare.?
The discussion was followed by a Monajat, asking for the forgiveness of his departed soul.
