The Sylhet divisional round of the ‘Climate Olympiad 2025’ was held at the Mini Auditorium of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). The event took place on Saturday (25 October), where three students from Metropolitan University earned places among the top ten contestants.
The competition was organised by ‘Brighters’, an organisation working to raise environmental awareness and engage young people in tackling climate change. The event was supported by BRAC University’s Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) as a partner institution.
More than a hundred students, teachers, organisers, and environmentally conscious young entrepreneurs from various schools, colleges, and universities across the Sylhet region participated in the event. The divisional segment was coordinated by ‘Green Explore Society’, the only environmental student organisation at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.
The opening ceremony was graced by Syedur Rahman Siam, founder and director of ‘Brighters’, who officially inaugurated the competition. In his inspiring address, he encouraged young participants to take bold steps in addressing the challenges of climate change, saying, “The youth are the climate policymakers of tomorrow. For a sustainable future, we must begin raising awareness and taking meaningful action today.”
A total of ten students from Metropolitan University participated in this prestigious competition. All of them are members of the Metropolitan University Geography and Astronomical Society (MUGAS) and represent the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Economics, and Business Administration.
Among them, Banideepa Chakraborty from the 61st batch of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering secured 4th place, Samia Islam Zarin from the 27th batch of the Department of Economics achieved 7th place, and Md Abdul Fattah Mahdin from the 62nd batch of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering earned 8th place, demonstrating exceptional knowledge, analytical skills, and environmental awareness.
